Create the brick work as a straight piece, extract the edges of the curve you want as a spline. Use path deform and choose the extracted spline as the path.

I must say I've tried both approaches (as well as some others like conform to surface via poly freeform) and still can't do it nicely. The ffd mod is too rough for me, also pathdeform does a bit different thing in my case
1) More than likely your path deform is misbehaving because the object has a dirty transform history. You can reset that on the hierarchy tab, by clicking reset transform and scale.
2) The objects local pivot is in a wonky position and oriented in a weird way.
3) You are using PathDefom when you should be using the PathDeform(WSM)
4) There are settings inside of the PathDeform(WSM) that you aren't setting correctly.

or brute force it in place with an ffd mod.
