Update texture pixels when re-uv unwrapping

Hello everyone,

I was wondering if there was a good way to accomplish the following.

Let's say I already have a model uv unwrapped and textured. Then let's say I did a terrible job on the un unwrapping and I want to redo the uv unwrapping. Is there a way easily (with no loss in image quality) do the unwrap and have the texture image updated along with the unwrap? Of course some scaling will occur and what not due to a new uv layout, but I'm OK with that.

I know I can accomplish something like this in ZBrush if I do the following:

1. load polypaint via texture
2. UV unwrap
3. Bake polypaint to texture

Unfortunately (I think) the quality of the texture depends heavily on the density of the mesh. So if I was doing this for a full body and I already had say a 4096x4096 texture for the body, I couldn't subdivide the mesh enough to maintain all the quality from the original texture.

This is actually something that I've wondered about for the longest time. If anyone has some really easy cool ways to do this I'd be so happy to hear about it. :)
