Hello Polycount!

This is my first post, so please bare with me as I adjust into this community.

Today I took my first step towards putting my work out there for others to use, and I'd like being new to the gaming industry, Advice from fellow Artists I believe would go a great way to developing myself.

I've posted an asset onto CGTrader today. Although it is a very basic asset, it's the first piece of work that's part of a larger project. The link to the piece is below:

https://www.cgtrader.com/free-3d-models/various/various-models/explosive-barrel

I'd like to know what is the best way to put myself out there, how to make my assets more desirable and appealing and generally anything I could improve and develop.

Thank you all!

And thank you for welcoming me to this community!

    I thought I should add an image of my work, so here you all go!

    There is a sketchfab viewer on the link above!

    Best way to put yourself out there is to put your art in many different places online! Polycount, Reddit, Facebook group Ten Thousand Hours, Instagram, etc etc. Sometimes you'll get no responses on one platform but 20 on another for the same prop.

    The barrel looks sweet, great job texturing it! Correct me if I'm wrong, but the skull design is from Substance Painter, correct? I'd steer clear of using pre-made stickers in this way. Did you create the materials yourself?

    Yes the skull is from substance, I'm only a first year student studying Games Design, and all we've actually done so far is modelling. Learning substance I am doing outside of Uni. The material is a smart material too. Hopefully soon I'll have learnt how to create my own materials and so forth, and will then start selling my assets :smile:

    Well good luck on the material creation side of things. Check out this playlist;

    Allegorithmic has some kick ass tutorials on YouTube, but this guy is pretty easy to follow and a good way of getting your foot in the door!

    That barrell is a good start but it still needs a lot of work. Use reference. Loom for photos of barrells. Yours needs to be smoother. Also the shader is off and the texture is too random.

    Great start though. Cheers!
