Hello again, old friends... It has been a long time since I posted any art here!

I've kinda fallen off the art bandwagon recently (closest I got to anything released recently was some modelling in Gears Ultimate, and a bit of texture work in Gears 4 MP), and since then I've been mainly working on game prototypes in VR, quick blockouts, C# and Python code.

So this morning I woke up and thought I'd take a crack at something that would work well in VR - and since I've been watching a bunch of "Chef's Table" on Netflix recently, I thought it'd be fun to try and make people salivate over virtual food... :)

Here's where I'm at now - a couple of Mental Ray renders from different camera angles. I'm using this as a "ground truth" of where I'd like to get it in real-time. Thinking of targeting SketchFab or Marmoset at the moment so I'll probably end up baking all lighting anyway.

This is all obviously just blockout at the moment, with simple color materials applied in Maya:

And a quick time-lapse of some lighting / materials and layouts I was playing with this evening:

Trying to be reasonably structured with this, so my process is:
  1. Block out everything in Maya, including rough materials (this is the current stage - I still need to add noodles & coriander!)
  2. Take key elements into ZBrush for sculpting & polypainting (meat, eggs, chillis, probably the bowl too)
  3. Reassemble resulting meshes in Maya and bake individual elements down
  4. Optimise and bake entire scene down for display in SketchFab or Marmoset
If this all goes well, I think I'll try to do a little series of tasty dishes and make a VR scene in Unity or UE4 to display them all in an appropriate restaurant environment.

Crits & feedback welcome, of course!
Cheers,
-MoP
