Story: Oban is a 15 year old boy from a forgotten tribe, as he has reached the right age, he now has to undertake the trials of the wilderness to become a hunter and a man in the eyes of his people.
This one will really test my anatomy and skin rendering as I cant hide any mistakes, it will be interesting doing a character with a body figure that is not fit and more natural looking.
I'm no concept artist so I hope you can see where I'm going with this one, and a few things will be added along the way in 3D I'm sure.
A small wip update, blocked in the bones and vines for his forearm and shin armor, still playing around with ideas for the necklace area. starting to think about methods for hair creation as well. Decided to go with hide for the skirt area as i can break up the design with some nice fur cards. coming together slowly. still 40+ days to go!
Getting close to blocking everything in for the body, almost detailing stage. Also quick test with some color to make it pop. Still have to block out the weapon as well, but might leave that for later in case I start running out of time.
Hair is place holder as ill be doing hair cards. Crits welcome please!
done most that I will do in sculpt, will do doing a pass on the skin before retopo, but the rest of the details will be done in texture through substance painter. Hair is place holder still as ill be doing hair cards still, may even give fibre mesh a go for eye brows, and shaved hair parts.
Tried to knock out all of the modelling stuff over the long weekend. Got the final sculpt done, did a quick spear, retopo'd all of the pieces, and baked out the normal, ao, and other maps. Time to get stuck into texturing!
Currently sitting at 36k tri's, 1x 4k texture for the body, bones, vines, necklace and spear. 1x 2k texture for the head and eyes. and will need another 2k texture for hair and fur ( well under the comps 2x 4k texture limit ).
Texture still in progress but i thought id do an update. added some basic eyes, still need to texture and make eye shadow meshes. add a lot more detail into the texture over all, then start the hair and fur cards. 14 days to go!
Gonna move on from texturing for now, get the hair and fur cards done, rig and pose, before I get back to texturing, I dont want to run out of time so im going to play it safe.
Ill be the first to admit im no good at rigging and skinning, only know the basics, so this is about as extreme pose as I can do without days of skinning needed. I still think I found something that's interesting enough for this character.
Now its clean up time and polish, still need to finish texturing, do his eyebrows (which i forgot ) make a base if I have time, and start setting up my renders and presentation requirements.
This past 2 months have been fun / stressful, but i'm happy with what I accomplished even know I wasnt in love with the design half way through.
Just doing the last little bits before I render out my finals for the comp, hit me up with crits as there's still time to change things! tonight I did:
put in eyebrow hair cards
made a African grass style base to ground him ( not sure if it works or looks good)

Crits still wanted of course!

tonight I did:
It's all done now, had a lot of fun doing this character.
Ended up with 4K texture for the body, 2K texture for the head, 2K texture for the hair and fur, and a 512 map for the base.
As always there's lots of stuff I would change if I could do it all again but that's the learning process of doing any art piece.
