I've been following
this tutorial step-by-step, until I realized that mine looks so terribly horrible.
In the image above, the one on the left is nHair and the one on the right is XGen. I cranked down the nHair hairs per clump to 30 first (the screenshot has 600 hairs per clump) before converting them to guides for XGen, as shown below:
My theory is that the primitives are interpolating incorrectly, like "Okay, this guide is near me so I'll follow it. W-w-w-wait, this other guide is nearer now! Yay, shortcut!"
I tried the clump modifier and set the map to Guides, but it isn't doing anything good either. Should I try region maps? Why is the braid on the video so perfect without him doing any fixing though?
Nobody is answering my question in the comments on that video. Hopefully, I get an answer here because right now, I'm stuck.

That tube groom thing is really cool! Thanks @oglu for showing me that.
I guess the reason why I didn't really try looking for other ways is because I was frustrated, like how come the guy had no problems whatsoever while I have even though I followed it step-by-step? It just doesn't make sense to me.
But yeah, I'll probably just go the tube groom way.
