Transition from character art to environment art?

Heard lots of harsh realities when it comes to character art, such as an oversaturated field in this industry, extremely competitive, not much demand, mostly contract work etc..
I really want to just have a full time job going to a studio from 9-5 and work as a 3D artist, but being a character artist I feel as though work would be unstable. Instead with environment art, there is more demand and money, and it's not as competitive.
