Post whatever manner of art you want, just try to do it in the appropriate section. Polycount's origins are in game related art and a large portion of the art posted has that focus in mind, but I think I can safely say nobody is going to get after you for posting other work. The 2D section for example is full of art that might not have game development as its target use (honestly, most of the 2D section could arguably be used for book covers, movies, marketing material, etc), and I've seen plenty of veteran members post real-world sculptures, sketches, or other sort of artworks. Of course, you might not get as many comments as you'd like if you post something too far from what people can provide feedback on.
At the end of the day, any manner of art has the potential to provide information or inspiration.
Don't mean to sound rude but are you sure?, Someone else said no...
I don't know of a rule regarding it, but since this is a game art forum, posting non-game art won't get you good feedback compared to a different site focused on your particular niche.
I was confused by this as well because from time to time I saw threads that had 3D printing or it was just high poly sculpts.
That said, the game art outnumbers everything else here, so it's up to you how you'll blend in the populace.
High poly sculpts are used in game art, usually for baking things like normal maps and other maps, as well as a guide when creating the topology of the low poly version.

I understand that. It's the lack of a game ready model that made me question things.
But that just shows where the line blurs. You can't look at a high poly model and assume is it for games or is it for another medium.

+1 As long as it somehow relates to the core topic of game art and is useful, I'd say go for it! I strongly believe that game artists can learn from other related disciplines. For that, it's of course useful if you post breakdowns, wireframes, workflows and not just a pretty picture that's unrelated to game or real-time work.

Ah! I think i get it now! , so to get the most of this site, post art(of any kind) that could be/is game ready, which technically speaking, is almost anything.
There's no hard rules, but generally most the of the stuff is geared towards game art or real time rendering. A lot of the highpoly sculpts and 3d prints that get posted are people that generally post game art, but are also trying something different.
Don't expect to get much help or feedback about VRay, Mental Ray, or other offline renders, or how to approach a model or scene from that kind of perspective. Every once in a while I'll see a thread in technical talk about one of those topics that gets largely ignored.
Architecture scenes in UE4 do get attention on Polycount, and generally offline renders that feel geared towards gaming in terms of theme or content do better as well.
Honestly, the lines are getting blurred more and more between creating art for real time rendering vs art for film/architecture/etc that I don't see it as a big deal. That said, I'll echo what was said above about this isn't quite the place for topics on rendering, but as for as character and asset/environment creation, I think we are at a point where anything goes.
Just don't turn this place into DeviantArt with furry porn and we're good!
What if people start making furry porn games? It'd make millions tbf... (Don't tell the people at DA) ;P
My 2 cents. Its mostly game art here because we are mostly a community of game artists. Our personal work is generally related to that as well.
However, I'd like to think people can post any work they like here (And I know they can atm) without it being told this is the wrong place for it. If people started posting lots of non game related artwork I'd love to see a new section created, "Other Arts". All art forms are a huge influence in much of what I do in games, and yes, I have other sites for that. But there is no reason why members here shouldn't be allowed to share the "Other art stuff" they do. This is a community for sharing... and caring. XD
I was going to make a new thread for this question but I guess it fits here.
Where would "Visual Novel" art fit? Technically, it's still game art because you can play them, but almost all interactivity is taken away from you apart from hitting "yes" or "no". As for the art itself, it can technically be 2D, 3D or even a hybrid.
I tried looking for any previous threads but I don't seem to find any Visual Novel art dumps here. Maybe I'll make Polycount history and be the first to post art like this. The art I've always wanted to make has more emphasis on story then interactivity, so this genre juxtaposes my ambition.
If you're wondering what a Visual Novel is, here's an example (don't ask me how I found a Tank dating simulator :* )
DA side story: some friends of mine used to play a deviant art drinking game. I can't remember exactly what drinks where for what but it was essentially go to the new submissions page and drink for every sonic fanart, furry art or fetish art. big drinks for combinations. For a while DA was so flooded with this crap we couldn't even attempt to play.

I wish they'd use the filters, that's what it's there for. I don't need it filling up my feed, or "discover" dashboard.

Aw Thank you!! This clears it up!, I'll be sure to note it down(i think I'll post a mix of game/non-game art then)! Can't wait to post!

Movies will become so interactive that you can walk up to a character and print them out, so that you can bring them home and play with them further.
So I'm just thinking one step ahead and treating all art the same. :*
