Hello. I started modeling the reciever by placing that cylinder first. (Where stock should go.) According to diameter of that cylinder I adjusted the width of reciever by making it a bit tinier than cylinder.
Tho Id just do a quick meshup of what I currently have so far. There are still some things missing on lower receiver and handle isnt finished yet along with stock. But crits welcome on overal modeling and maybe if something is off.
Haven't done much past 2 days but I tho Id post a quick mash up of things I got so far. (Shit isn't dynameshed nor edge polished) Live booleans in ZBrush(Aweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeesome)
Are you using Maya for just basic block in shapes and then going over to Zbrush in order to do booleans and detail? Im just getting into weapon modeling and would love to some info on the process for one of these pieces.
@zachagreg A mixture of zbrush booleans and Maya's creasing. Booleans that aren't overly complex I do it in Maya and crease the edges then send it to Zbrush via GoZ. For boolean shapes that require alot of cleanup later I just use live booleans. Creased edges marked in heavier blue.
@cromadbomber Thank's very much for that. I always get in this weird cycle of confusion when it comes to when to switch programs. Great stuff you're doing, can't wait to see more!
Another question popped up when I was going over some Zbrush Live Boolean tuts. How do you go about your low poly conversion? Do you consider the Maya boolean block the lowpoly and then just fix that up and bake or do you do a retopo for this type of workflow?
When you clean up in Maya what settings do you have set to so everything retains its shape? Decimating and dynamesh to zremesh always gives me messed up edges after booleans.
This is the base mesh in Maya. Pretty much as you can see at the moment is that my lowpoly is basically highpoly. As for the scope part. I import it into Zbrush and do all boolean operations in there. After that I repeat the same step in Maya - I just boolean all the parts and delete junk faces/verts that were produced by Mayas booleans. Thats pretty much it. No decimation/Zremesher and what not.

Just quick test on rail in ZBrush.
Some Zbrush tests. Ignore black thing on last image it is some rendering error. I will polish edges more.
Upper receiver is not yet finished. c&c welcome.
Here is the MAGPUL stock. I still have to add some smaller details.
