We have found and fixed a hand full of last minute bugs. And we have readded the align view buttons from Bforartists 1 back into the header. I missed it too much in my workflow. And we have corrected a mistake at the versioning numbers. This is Bforartists 2. And so the version number should be Bforartists 2.0.0. It is now.
This release is a milestone release. It ends the development cycle for Bforartists 2, and continues the success story of the Bforartists project. This doesn't mean the end of development. Quite the opposite. This just means that we have finally a stable version that can be used in production. A version where we can finally make tutorials for again. The first quickstart videos are popping up at the moment. We will continue to release a new and updated version every time a new Blender version appears. And we will continue to improve Bforartists as good as we can.
But the focus of the next months will be at the manual and the tutorials first. We have lots of gaps here that we need to close. And we need to close them first before we can go on with adding features.

Bforartists 2.5.0 brings the fixes and changes from Blender 2.90. And some minimal corrections and fixes that we have found at our way through the missing manual chapters. Bforartists 2.5.0 is based on Blender 2.91 Alpha.
We have also updated the manual. All chapters are written now, so it is feature complete. And this means this chapter is finally finished, and we can continue to develop the software now.
The download offers for linux are now reduced to two. tar.gz and deb. RPM seems not longer supported by Blender, the script is missing. And i never managed to get SH to work. Linux remains a difficult chapter.

Bforartists 2.5.1 brings the fixes and changes from Blender 2.90.1.
The windows binaries are already up. Mac binary will most probably follow shortly. Unfortunately we have now just the tar.gz version of Linux left. In case somebody wants to have a look at deb and rpm versions, we are open to any help. But i have stopped to ruin my nerves with it.

Bforartists 2.6.0 brings the fixes and changes from Blender 2.91. And it brings the first changes from the current development cycle of Bforartists. As usual it is not one big change. But includes lots of small changes like left aligned props which are now also in the panels that are C code based, better defaults, improved tooltips, panel layouts and organizations, and so on. Properties that shows hidden content have for example now a little triangle button besides. The content of panels is indent to improve readability and organization. Some changes at the keymap. F2 is now search. And some fixes. This release brings all in all over 230 changes.
All binaries are up. The update of the manual needs a bit longer. Please be patient.

Bforartists 2.7.0 brings the fixes from Blender 2.91.2. It also brings quite a few new features from Blender 2.92 alpha. Like the new geometry node editor. Bforartists 2.7.0 is already based at Blender 2.93 Alpha.
In Bforartists we have fixed the usual things like aligning ui content left, and adding new icons to the new tools. The new geometry nodes can already be inserted from the sidebar instead of the add menu. Most of the nodes have an icon now in the header, which makes it easier to distinguish them in the node viewport. We did quite a few changes at the layout, like in the transform panel. Now you can animate from there, no need to dive into the properties editor anymore. Quite a few panels written in C code have now left aligned content. The adjust last operation panel for example. The align view buttons addon up right is extended. Some editors have now the options as a dropdown panel up right. And we did lots of smaller refinements, changes, improvements and fixes.
All in all we have fixed 124 issues in this release.

Bforartists 2.8.0 brings the new features and fixes from Blender 2.92. Bforartists 2.8.0 is already based at Blender 2.93 Alpha.
In Bforartists we have fixed the usual things to adopt the updates in Blender to Bforartists, like aligning new ui content left, and adding new icons to the new tools. The number of changes is rather small in this release since we had a release before a month already. But there are some interesting highlights.
In the image editor and with a render result selected you don't see the tools anymore that you can't use. The node editors are now connected by tab buttons, like we did with the animation editors before. So that you can switch from shader editor to compositor editor with one mouse click. Orbit around selection is now the default rotation behaviour. You can now show and hide the groundgrid with one button, and for all views. You can now lock the rotation. Useful for working in the 2d animation template where you can easily accidentally rotate the viewport. We have also removed some old mistakes. The radial hotkey menu entries are removed since they did not show the hotkeys in all cases. Which was the main purpose of this entries. You can now read the hotkey in the tooltip of the brush sliders. The new geometry nodes editor receives permanently new nodes, which requires us to create new icons and add them to the sidebar too. The Align Views addon has been expanded to include some of the most frequently used overlay settings, so that, for example, the 3D cursor or the ground grid can be switched on and off directly in the header. Optional of course. Customization is one of the goals of Bforartists.

Bforartists 2.9.0 brings the new features and fixes from Blender 2.93 LTS. Bforartists 2.9.0 is already based at Blender 3.0 Alpha.
The first major project concerns the Tool Shelf. Bforartists 2.9.0 brings back the tool shelf tabs. Most of the content from the header text menus can now also be found in the tool shelf as icon buttons. The tabs are optional. You can deactivate it.
The second big project in this version was the new Geometry Nodes Editor. The content of the Add menu in the Geometry Node Editor is now also available here in the sidebar in panels, if desired as icons. The nodes now each have an icon in the viewport.
Another big ongoing project is to split the tooltips by tool. Blender unfortunately still has a single tooltip and a tool name for up to 6 different tools. And we've made the usual little tweaks and changes. New UI content aligned to the left, human-understandable tooltips incorporated, new icons created for the new tools, and so on. All in all, there are over 280 changes in this version.
The Windows and Linux binaries are already available. We are still working on the Mac versions. Please be patient.

We have released a last small point upgrade. Bforartists 2 Version 2.9.1 is a small point release that brings some last changes and fixes. It is the last version in the Bforartists 2 series. Bforartists 3 Version 3.0.0 comes with all the changes from Blender 3. And lots of improvements for Bforartists. The constraints have now left aligned text too. The Ui and tooltips got further streamlined. The tabs in the tool shelf are now in other editors available too. The toolbar has some new entries. We have around 200 new icons for the geometry nodes editor. And all these nodes in the sidebar available. The asset browser has its first own workspace. We added some more matcaps. And a ton of small improvements and fixes. The small changes always makes the masses of the changes. A little improvement here, a little improvement there ...
All in all it's around 340 changes in this release. Not every change is a change at the source code. We needed to fix github actions for example. This was also a very time consuming task. Github actions is the test compile to check if there are some problems in the source code.
We have also a new experimental keymap with some vital changes regarding the brushes handling. The brushes hotkeys moved from F, in combination with holding ctrl, shift and alt, to X C V keys. And F is now Frame selected. No need anymore to release the mouse and press numpad 0 to put the selection in focus. Please test this new keymap for conflicts. These changes will most probably go into the main keymap with the next point release.

One of the last big projects in Bforartists is fulfilled. All text and properties are now left aligned in the modifiers too. The experimental keymap with F to center at the view and X C V to adjust the brushes is now the main keymap. The rest is the usual work to keep Bforartists updated with the Blender changes. Align all the new middle alignend things left in the UI, create new icons, fix oddities. All in all we have around 110 changes in this release.
This release ends the current development cycle. Our design goals for Bforartists are largely met. And we fade slowly into a maintaining development status to keep our changes stable, consistent and up to date with Blender. But we won't stop to make Bforartists better and better.

I think this is a rather interesting project, but as mentionned earlier (I think ?) one crucial piece of information is missing : how does BFA deal with the blender preferences folder ? Meaning, would a version of BFA based on 3.1 conflct/override the preferences folder in AppData\Roaming\Blender Foundation\Blender\3.1 ? And if it doesn't cause any conflicts, well, how are things stored then ?
This topic is probably considered too advanced for the target audience of BFA but ironically this is the single reason I personally never tried these builds. Because the fact that it is not clearly stated makes me fear that it might indeed wipe out my preferences and that's not a risk I am willing to take. Having to setup a test machine or having to prepare backups just to find out sounds like a drag (and a litteral waste of time).
Also (and that's a bit of a tangent ...) I feel like there is a market out there for less heavy modifications to the software than the full-on BFA reskin. For instance Blender would hugely benefit from better support for floating windows (mainly for the UV editor and the shader and texture editors), as well as having the ability to resize the 4-quadrant viewport. These are things that I think many would be more than happy to pay for.
Many thanks for asking. There is no conflict. Bforartists is independent. We have of course our own preferences folder :)
This means at the contrary that you need to migrate your addons. The in Blender installed addons will not work out of the box in Bforartists. And Blender settings, namely the startup.blend and the userpref.blend, should not be migrated. This can lead to conflicts up to the situation that Bforartists does not start anymore. We have quite a few settings different under the hood. Blender misses for example the toolbar editor. So please just migrate the addons folder. Not the whole content
For the less heavy modified version, well, where to draw the line here? Which modification should be included, which not? All we can do is to make Bforartists as good as possible. So we improve what we can and what makes sense. Every change has a good reason.
Things like resizable quad view is not part of it though, unfortunately. That's already a core feature, and is best asked the Blender developers. I don't even have an idea how this could be achieved. Our dilemma here is, every change at the core code makes updating and maintaining the fork harder. We have to care that the project remains manageable. So we usually just concentrate at the UI.
When you just want to change the icons, our colored icons are located here. They are of course open source and gpl compatible.

You can by the way already create floating windows. Hover over a corner of a editor, hold down shift, and drag. This will create a floating editor window :)
Ah, and thanks for this, i just found a bug here. The window should of course contain the name Bforartists. Not Blender. Even after years i find such surprises :D
Ha, that way of popping out a window is pretty cool, didn't know about it and only knew about Window>New Window. But still, having little buttons in the UI to create the main important ones (UVs, shader editor, texture paining editor) would be great, for instance.
As to where to draw the line, who knows indeed !
If anything I feel like the knowledge accumulated by developping this fork could be directed at creating some handy standalone tools. Like a barebones sculpting program, perhaps a painting app, and so on ...
View menu - Area - Duplicate Window into new Window is the same functionality. You can also add a hotkey to it. Then you don't need to aim at the corners anymore :)
Well, i know what you mean. It just makes not much sense. The average user doesn't work with floating windows permanently. And for the masses these buttons would crowd the UI. Well, maybe this could be done by an addon. But it is too special. Just used by a few people then. And the functionality is already there. It is even pretty comfortable with shift dragging it out.
Blender and Bforartists is a general CG tool. And i promised to deliver the same functionality than Blender. To turn Blender or Bforartists into a standalone one trick tool is the job of somebody else. I am happy enough that we managed to improve Blender :)
A showstopper bug made it necessary to release a new version. Bforartists 3 Version 3.1.3 fixes three small bugs and this showstopper bug. At some PC’s Cuda cards was not (properly) detected, and so it was not possible to render at the GPU.

This release has a new feature called the 3D Sequencer, where you can use scene strips as shots in a “pinned” video sequencer timeline to change the 3D View scene contents, camera, and animation dynamically. There are lots of small changes, the toolbar now integrated into the header now. There is a new Power User Tools addon and another 123 task and features added to everything from the latest from Blender 4.1.0 and 4.2.0 Alpha to the date.
