Hello there. I'm having trouble finding a shading/ view that makes it easy to retoplogize using quad draw in Maya.
With x-ray, the mesh becomes too convoluted (backside of mesh complicated editing)
and with x-ray off the edges of the retoplogized mesh fall under the base mesh and become hidden.
Is there a shading/ transparency setting on maya that allows me to view the mesh edges without going full x-ray with the base mesh? Thanks.

To do this, it's in the viewport, under the "Renderer" tab. Switch it over to "Legacy High Quality Viewport".
It's not as good, performance-wise, as Viewport 2.0, unfortunately. But as long as you don't have ridiculous amounts of polygons, it should perform alright.
but there is an update comming this should fix it...
