in maya there is since version 2013 a new standard for vertex smoothing...
you get really clean surface shading in the viewport...
!! you have to save the prefs and restart maya to get it working !!
!! but dont save your scene files i got those infos baked into a mesh !!
http://download.autodesk.com/global/docs/maya2014/en_us/index.html?url=files/GUID-232E99F8-96B4-4870-8BA0-4887C1C8F0F2.htm,topicNumber=d30e189713
but is there any way to get the same in max... i have to bring some assets from maya to max and its a pain...
it does work with locked normals and obj... but i need them unlocked...
otherwise have have to do some more hard edges...

Sadly Max doesn't have an option to calculate angle and area weighted normals by default.
You could unlock them, do whatever changes you need todo and recalculate them using this script by ByteHazard:
https://github.com/ByteHazard/wnormals/blob/master/weightednormals.ms
It should give you results that are close to mayas calculation, but normals will be locked/explicit afterwards.
