I'm going for an old-fashioned-yet-futuristic look.  Where can I improve? (Sorry for low sample render)

I'm getting conflicting impressions as to the size of the ship.  The hatch on top looks enormous compared to the ladder, and the large bolts on the engines and the pair of metal strips in front make the ship look more like a toy than a full-sized vehicle.  That said, I like what you've been doing with the turret.  It has a nice retro look to it.

Thanks for pointing that out!  I think that the ladder is a tad small (The hatch is the proper indication of size).  The bolt thickness is partly due to low res textures (if you mean the ones that I'm thinking of.)  Think it's better with thinner metal?

Yeah, and just some small bits of detail would be helpful in general.  For example, you might alter the wood texture on the hull from a solid sheet to some planks.  It would give a better impression of scale, and help break up the surface a bit.
