Thread for the scene I'm working on based on a piece of art by Chong Fei Giap. I welcome feedback along the way. Working on this as an environment art portfolio piece.
@RainbowRat yea they are gorgeous. And I cant wait to get to that part. Building modeling is a cruel form of torturing. I just wanna texture and do cute props haha
Update, bringing things into unreal and doing the first pass on texturing. Trying to find a balanced between stylized and realistic. Might do another pass that's a bit more stylized. Also, the wood texture is a placeholder I was using to doublecheck my UV's.
You've picked a great piece to recreate in 3D, There are loads of busy little interesting parts to that concept. The modeling is coming along great. I do also agree that you should develop and push the stylised look furtehr into the piece as it will definitely give it added charm.
Keep it up and I look foreward to your next update.
@FreneticPonies agreed, I need to go back and add a little contrast to my base texture. Also I'll be vertex painting in some variance. @RustySpannerz Thanks! And yea I am loosing some of the vibrance. I'm constantly tweaking back and forth, trying to find a way to bring it into reality without loosing any of the magic or overdoing the Post Processing. I think a lot of it is the lighting, there's a lot more lighting variance in the concept than I have in mine. I need to concentrate on finishing up the modeling and texturing, but I plan on doing loads of tweaking at the end to try and get the feel. I'm also experimenting with some fog or camera fade to try and match how the left side of the picture fades to white a bit.
I love the concept and you are doing great with the mood and lighting. The biggest critique I can give is that you should try to nail the wobbly lines of EVERYTHING in the concept. Your hyper-straight lines are clashing with what the concept accomplished. I would even attempt a material that accepts vertex colors as a 'wobble' deformation so that you can hit the scene up en masse in UE4 rather that do it per asset in a 3D package.
@Quack! Thanks! That's really helpful critique. I had no idea I could deform with vertex colors, but it makes sense. I'll look into it and see what I can come up with.
I love these colours. Are you using any particular lighting/Postprocess effects to bring out the saturation or is it just the textures doing the heavy lifting?
@ZacD good feedback. I added a little emissive to make the shadows not quite so black. By splashes of color do you mean the things that look like flowers?
You can totally not agree with me, since what i'm going to say is a matter of personal opinion. But if it was me i would reduce that "hazy" bloom of the scene -- if you know what i mean. I think it is too much, to the point where the forms are almost fusing togheter. I like it better on this state, like a (still) fresh mid day:

Can't wait to see more!
Signs! (all but one), reflections, couple lighting/shadow tweaks, and played around with vertex deformation, but only slightly.

Again, this is my personal taste. I'm loving the way it is coming together though!
Love the mood and the colors, quite simple but nice.
Today I completely re-did the lighting and post. I think I like it better, its a much closer match to the ref and not as overly processed.
