I'm a little late to the party but I wanted to give this a try.
ok so here are my thoughts, I'm just going to compare Handplane to other software I've used.
What I like:
- Projection Group - straight up saves time, not much more to say.
- Loads high poly models fast - my model was almost 2 million polys and it loaded almost instantly.
- Floaters - I didn't use this much other than testing. If I can incorporate it into my workflow it should save some time.
- the ability to export proper tangent space normal maps for all major software - I feel like this is really a must-have these days, however, Xnormal doesn't have it.
- Very good UI - I had no problem understanding most of the features.
What I would like to see improve:
- I would like either the ability to create a cage in Handplane or make it more like Substance painter where a cage isn't necessary
- some of the options aren't really self-explanatory for less experienced users, it would be nice to be able to hover over a button and it tell you what it does (like zbrush)
Conclusion:
Handplane is definitely the best free baking tool I've used, and I will be recommending it to friends.
I'm looking forward to 1.0
