Help with a certain shape

I was wondering if there is a tutorial or if anyone know a certain technique to help model shape circled.  I am using 3ds max.

I would make one of those tall curved shapes and then just duplicate and rotate it 4 times. Does that make sense?

I was already planning to make one and duplicating it. I am having trouble getting the curled part of the bottom.

Make a cylinder in the middle, modle the shape next to it  then just copy and rotate a couple of times and add poly's on the middle cylinder and attach the 4 pieces., This is what I'd do, add more or less poly's as you feel like.

This is the best I can show you from my office computer.

Edit: Totally forgot to draw the horizontal lines in the middle piece but I think you'll figure it out.

Other than placement of each piece and resizing all of them what do you guys think? Before I start to finish up on this what are some things I can change or alter?
