“Sol 426, after traveling 1,389 light years from Earth, Galileo and her crew has decided to rest next to HD567910 to celebrate the holidays. Commissioned in 2365, the Galileo was the newest research vessel of the explorer class. Outfitted with the latest in long-range sensory apparatuses, it is designed for long-term planetary observation for human colonization efforts.”
Hey everyone, I just finished a scene that I have been working on that is inspired by Deus Ex, Mass Effect, and Star Citizen!
Wow ! Good mood ! The hologram planet is amazing, it is real time rendering ? Maybe some parts are too dark and a bit difficult to read (at least on my screen...). I don't know what engine you are using but maybe increase the indirect lighting / bounce light will help to light the dark parts. The gold tape on the Christmas tree looks flat, it's a bit strange, like you painted line on it... i am not sure but maybe add occlusion and improve the reflection's look will help to add depth to it ? One last, just personal opinion but i don't like the glow on the tiny lights of the tree. Compare to the amazing glow of the hologram it's looking a bit cheaper. I think it will look better if you lower the intensity and slightly add a saturated deep blue on the border.
Anyway, good work and even if the pitch is short i really appreciate the story.
Oh wow, nice work. I like the high contrast look personally! It's also just nice to see sci-fi work that isn't "generic industrial spaceship corridor 35648u78juf8" or whatever.
I think in a handful of your shots that mix of home-y and sci fi gets lost. For instance, the one with the couch in the background...you see the trim from that doorway, but other than that it looks almost fully like a regular home. Maybe just a few more details in those shots to bring in just a little more of that tech flavor will help to carry the story through each shot.
I think the last shot with the christmas tree is pretty clever. The rounded corner and the wall paneling that looks like regular wood at first, then gives a little sci fi vibe is great! It might be a little subtle. Maybe some futuristic wall outlet, or ceiling light, or some other element can push that a little more in that shot. Oh, just realized that the door handle appears to be quite small, bugs me now that I notice it.
I love the mood overall, and the light from the planet through the window is cool! You do a great job mixing the cold space look with warm comfy home.
My god this is so astonishing. Absolutely love the hologram, even the glasses/bottle materials! Perhaps they are refracting too much, or too perfectly of the scene? Seems the rooms reflection is too 'opaque'.
@Kanni3d Thanks for the kind words! For the glass materials I do have the opacity and reflectivity up quite high, that might be what's causing that effect.
Great scene Richard, really inspirational, quick question though, the vessel wood lattice, did you model the lattice or is it a plane with the substance material applied in it with an alpha? Same for the ornament piece at the wine table.
Thanks @kohg! The wood lattice is a plane with a substance material that I made. If you are referring to the coffee table, the ornate piece is using geo for the base shapes but relies on the normal map for the smaller details. Hope this answers your question.
@joshmtyler haha, yeah he is a good friend of mine.
Hey everyone, I recently did an interview with 80.lv on my scene. It goes in depth on the creation of the hologram as well as other areas of production. If you are interested you can check it out here: https://80.lv/articles/creating-earth-hologram-in-ue4/
