Thanks, I've since updated it (below) but the spec is still black. I'm guessing you mean reflection channel? In this case I'm using PBR roughness/Metal and since wood isn't metal I've made it pure black. I'm 99% sure that map should be pure black but if not please let me know.
Wood tends to polish itself with wear. You have these nice lighter splotches across the wood that indicates this wear and would be a great place to reduce the roughness to reflect the light just a bit more. These sorts of subtle things adds so much more believability to a material. Rarely should a channel be completely black or completely white.
I really like the colors in your newest one. The fine noise on the wood grain is great, but I don't really feel like the knots work very well. Look at the grain on this, it has a few less actual knots, but they all integrate better into the overall grain pattern. Or if you're going for wood that has been much more abused I would emphasize the large breaks in the grain like in this. Also maybe add some displacement to give it a bit more flair? Other than that keep it up! =D
Thanks for the tips and reference noosense, I revisited the grain again. This time I managed to get the knots and straight lines working much better together. There is a lot of cool stuff going on here but again I'm not selling it very well through marmoset viewer. I keep wanting to add gloss but this is old wood, so it doesn't have gloss. So it looks flat and dull? I'm going to take a look and figure out how others present their wooden substances.
