Hey guys,
I'm fairly new at using 3DSmax, and this is my first time trying to apply textures to a character.
The texture on the clothing isn't really finished, but at this point I'm just trying to make everything show up the way I want it to, then I'll add more details.
On this image, I have 4 different objects.
1. The black parts (face, hands and inside of clothing)
2. The unwrapped texture on the clothes (and lantern)
3. The yellow eyes with self-illumination
4. The glass on the lantern (it's just a low-opacity material.)
If I do it like this, all the colors show up in the right spot without making a fuss!
But I thought it would be better if everything was just one object. So I attached everything, and made a multi-sub object material instead of having them as 4 different ones.
This is where my headaches start...
I have attached all the objects into one, called "Ghost".
I have made a multi-sub-object material with 4 materials, identical to the ones that I had before, except this time they're all in one list.
I have selected my elements on the model, and assigned them an ID number, the same number as the materials in the list. (For example, the "clothes" material is no.2 in the list, so I assigned the ID no.2 to them).
But the image won't appear on that surface. It stays black!
As for the black parts: they turn white.
ONE of the parts, at least, didn't put up a fight.
But the eyes... nope.
I tried changing the numbers in my list of materials, but I'm lucky if even one of the colors will show up on its correct location. What am I not getting??
Thanks in advance!

Not sure what the problem was, but I did what you said, and I also think I was clicking the wrong button to return to the parent menu, and it changed things around somehow when I did that.
Thanks!
As what EliasWick said, probably you drag and drop the material on face mode instead of object mode. If you do this, Max will auto create a new multisub material for you with a wrong ID setup. You can test it by eyedropping the 'wrong material' of that model into an empty slot on your mat editor window and see what new material Max created for you. But glad you sorted out the problem.
