Poly count increased by ~130k and Maya scene size by 20mb - Freezing makes scene unworkable

Hey, it's my first time modeling and posting here but while finishing up my character I noticed there was a large amount of freezing when rotating joints to test skin weights. After looking at my poly count I realised that the stats went from:

to:

The scene size also went to 22mb from the last save increment that was 3mb. I noticed that there were around 5 faces in every face in the model, as if I duplicated every face in the model multiple times. After using Maya's clean up tool to remove lamina faces I managed to get the poly count close to what it was previously, however I checked the UV editor and found that all the faces became their own shells, and I couldn't convert them back to whole shells without having to map them again.

(This is with shell selection on, literally every face on the model has become it's own shell)

I even tried using Mesh > Transfer Attributes from the mesh from a previous save and the shells were mostly as they were, but the file size is still large and causes freezing when performing actions such as rotating joints the mesh is attached to, which doesn't happen on older saves before the poly/UV increase.

I'd like to avoid reverting back to an old save as quite a lot of work was done after the poly and UV count increased, do you have any idea what could have caused this? The model currently sits at

6k faces like it had before the huge increase, the only major difference being the amount of UVs. Are the freezes and large file size definitely linked to the large UV count? Is it worth trying to fix or should I just revert to an older save?

Thanks!
