This is an on-going project, so I'll be posting pics of the overall project.
Some progress and sketches are in my digital sketchbook. I did the base model in Maya. I was never introduced to Zbrush, while I was in school; ironically it came shortly after I graduated. It certainly feels like I'm behind with the norm program wise, so I'm trying to make due with what I know and have: Maya, Mudbox, and Photoshop.
I'm doing the sculpt in parts.
Right now I finished up the scales on its leg with the intention to retopologize to pull out the bigger ones in the center and shape them so it looks layered. I realized that I spread its uv across 2 grids, so I may as well start sculpting base forms of its lower half, retopologize it, and redo both of their uvs at the same. I wasn't aware that the retopologize tool in Mudbox would erase all the uv information. YAY!
You can also see my experimentation with wrinkles. I was nearly overwhelmed trying to find the right brush and fall off to make these crisp wrinkles. After study tortoises, I utilized elephant hide.
I welcome all the comments, critiques, and advice in what you'd do differently.
