I had a look at your portfolio and the first thing I would do is pin down your specailty. Character, enviroment or props. Pick one and focus on that. If you have a varierty of work it can have a negative effect. you cant do everything, when you try to be a jack of all trades you end up being a master of none and it will reflect in your work.

You are only as good as your weakest peice in your portfolio (which is why only have 2 peices atm :(). I would take out your Christine model. She is eaisly the worst peice and leaves a bad aftertaste. You have potential but you need to focus more on anatomy. You can do stylised but you really need to know the muscle groups before you can exagurate them.

Another great tip is show your work in its intended purpose, for example if you are creating a character for a game, show it running in an engine. Zbrush sculpts are nice but employers want to see it finished and know its fit for purpose, if they cant use it, they dont care.

Heres a really great talk on what should and shouldn't be in your portfolio:

I hear that last years talk on this subject was better because they showed actuall work as examples but I can find that one.

Hope this helps and doesnt discourage you, keep pushing forward.

Thank you very much emerald! I appreciate the depth of critism you have given me.

In terms of focusing on a specific type of art (character, environement or props) what if say an employer is looking for someone who can model animals and cars and guns. If for example I focus on just characters would that not limit my chances of getting the job? Where I live it is quite difficult to get a job as a 3D artist due to the limited amount of opprtunities and competition.

I will definately remove the Christine model as looking at it now I can see that it brings my portfolio down. I need to study anatomy more as I think it is a weakness for me.

I've been wanting to showcase my work in a more preactical maner and the closest I've gotten was showing my Samsung model inside of Unity. That being said I need to do that with all my artwork.

I'm looking forward to watching that video as I'm always eager to learn and improve.

I would like to thank you again for taking time out of your life to help me and your feedback has encouraged me to listen and apply.

No problem, Im always happy to help.

Regarding the focus on one area of art, employers are generally looking for an artist who is fantastic in a specific area because they will likely already have someone else focusing on the other areas. This is mostly AAA studios and there is always exceptions to this rule. If its a studio with a much smaller team then you may have to chip into other areas as well, this is were having skills in multiple disciplines could help. That said when you split yourself across other areas, it will affect your preffered discipline. Characters and vehicles are very different and each require dedication and knowledge to produce really good results.

Id recomend looking at your competitions portflios and studying them if possible. Im willing to bet the really good ones will focus on a particular field. I would also tailor your portfolio to the studio your applying to. Look at their history of games and try produce work to that standard. eg, Bioware arent going to want to see hand painted, stylized stuff but that would be perfect for Blizzard.

That vid will certainly help, its long but well worth the invesment.

If you have anymore questions feel free to ask.
