Shading 2D Artwork

I just got into digital art and I'm trying to shade my artwork in photoshop. I can't seem to do it efficiently. I'm currently trying to use a soft brush and adjusting opacity for lighter shading, but the strokes overlap to create an ugly dark spot and I have to either blur the region or smudge it carefully to get the effect of a smooth shadow. I feel like I'm doing something wrong here as I'm literally taking over half an hour just to shade and correct an arm compared to less than five minutes when I draw on paper. How do you guys shade stuff?

There are many different approaches. You can look for "blending tutorials" on google.

Strictly using just the soft brush isn't a good idea unless you want something that looks blurry. I also wouldn't recommend changing opacity settings when you start painting in the detail, or else you may end up with inconsistent values (i.e certain areas may get darker or lighter faster compared to the whole picture).

One tutorial for I used when I first started digitally painting.
