Painting with brushes in Substance Painter

I'm trying to paint with a brushes in Substance Painter to hide/ expose scratch masks but I can't get my brush to change color. Currently it's black and I believe "X" inverts the color but it isn't. I can use my eraser to undo paint strokes but without the ability to invert my brush color, I don't know how to reveal scratches. Where are color controls located?

If you're trying to paint on a mask with a generator/mask texture you need to add a paint layer to the mask stack.
