This little devil (Siren) is another result of a notebook doodle. Its definitely a habit of mine to interrupt a profile with an architectural or angular structure, usually on the head. It always just seems nicely jarring. Indulging in habit is definitely in contravention of “proper” design, where, I suppose, some sort of brief should come first.
Habit is something I generally try to resist. The design work I admire most is that which relies on the crutch of habit the least. Its really refreshing when an artist’s set of skills seems to change from one project to the next.
I’m surprised its taken me this long to model a devil, as it is pretty much all I used to draw as a teenager having come across the gothic oddites of Jacques Callot, Abrecht Dürer and Hieronymous Bosch. And Doré, of course.
