Problems UVing with Maya 2016

I have been trying to UV this plank for a project that I am working on. While doing it I have run into a lot of problems with the UV editor.

This is what the UV looks like when I planar map it. Looks great and works pretty well but I want to unwrap it before I work with it. 
 

When I go to unwrap it this is what it looks like. Am I doing something wrong here? As I understood unwrapping this should not happen.


Additionally, when do automatic Mapping this is what the object looks like, I have tried fiddling with the setting for everything and have seen no change. No matter what I auto map it always comes out as a huge mess.


Any help would be greatly appreciated. I very well could be just doing something wrong.
