i recently switched to 3ds max 2016 (sp2) and now I can't rotate using alt-mmb. The viewport freezes after a second or two and stays like that until I release the mouse button. I've searched here and on google and all the answers (going back to max 2012) are basically "happens sometimes, you're screwed". I've tried changing display driver etc, nothing helps. Rotating using the "orbit" button (without using the mmb) works fine.
How is it possible that this is not fixed? Would appreciate any tips.
edit: windows 10, gtx1070

-Unplug your tablet if you have one.
-Try running as administrator, if already running as admin, try disabling.
-Try a different mouse (like monster said)
-Rollback your driver to the first one supporting windows 10, that doesn't work, try the newest.
-Disable wintab services.
-Turn off power saving in Nvidia control panel. (Prefer max performance in power management setting)
-Smack your computer on the side while facing west and yelling "Woop-woop-woop!".
...ok maybe not that last one.
2016 is up to SP5 now. Might be worth a shot updating. My feeling is it's a win10 thing as I've never encountered that issue (win 7sp2)
I just found a solution of the freezing problem in the different Max versions, in my case 2018. If you have A4tech X7 mouse (or similar with Mouse Report Rate settings) set MRR to 125-250 Hz and you will get smooth rotation in the viewport when pressing Alt+MMB
