Hello everyone! We are a team of 4 Animation & Game Students and 2 Sound Students and are working on an animated short about Blood Diamonds.
Currently we are 4 weeks into the project and almost finished pre-production - the final deadline for the short will be 2nd of februrary.
We will post our progress here in order to showcase our work and get feedback to make our movie even better.
About the project:
Given the semester topic of crime our idea is to create an animated short starting out like a luxury commercial but slowly revealing the truth behind (some) diamonds - the so called blood diamonds.
Our project will be a semi-metaphorical 3D still life were the story is mainly told through composition and camera movement of about 1.5 minutes length rendered in Redshift.
Overall inspiration in terms of cinematography will be the deadpool intro and the cinematic for cyberpunk 2077.
The story will be told through the example of two characters: a wealthy woman and an african rebel, contrasting luxury and ignorance with war and poverty.

Moodboards & Animatics:The advantage of not needing "real" animations due to the snapshot/frozen time style of the video is that we do not have to rely on storyboards but can rather block out and iterate on the cinematography directly in 3D.
Here is our latest version of the animatic featuring WIP and placeholder everythings.

Here is a quick mockup for the overall scene:

Some first assets and test renderings will follow pretty soon.
As always, feedback regarding -everything- is highly appreciated.

Here are some first assets/turntables and render tests.
Still WIP, we are currently working on a modular kit to set up the slum houses and additional assets to populate the scenes more.

Watch will be smoothed in the final rendering, no shading/lookdev on this yet.
Hopefully we will have some more render tests in a few days
Here is a first still from our first almost finished shot:
Currently we are mostly doing these "filler" type of shots until the character/props for the more complex ones are ready.
Color grading and in parts shading is not final and will be adjusted at the end to be more consistent between shots.
the last weeks we have been building more assets and mainly worked on one of our two characters.
Even though she is slowly looking better, she still feels a bit uncanny so every feedback is very welcome.
No update for quite some time but we are still working on this - here is an improved render of the woman:
Also another work in progress shot (which still needs some work):
We have 3 more weeks to go, so we will see how much time we will have for additional polishing at the end.
Currently we have all shots rendered and are working on some additional vfx/tweaks/polishing right now.
Here is another WIP shot, currently missing a muzzleflash and smoke..

We had a lot of fun working on this and are actually quite happy with the result
We are aware of the bullet and its shell - unfortunately we just noticed it ourselfs at the day of our presentation so there was no time to fix this Your idea with the diamonds being the bullet is actually really nice, we never thought of it
