3ds Max 2017 - box modeling. Rotating polygon scales edges in. How to rotate (to change direction) and keep exact scale? Or do you have to manually adjust vertex after the rotation?
I would say you have to do it manually, though I suggest other methods, like using a one sided plane with a shell modifier (with even thickness), then you can extrude away and it will add thickness as you go. Or, instead of rotating, you could just go straight to moving vertices.
Thanks - I kind of figured I'd be adjusting manually but wanted to make sure I wasn't missing a neat trick. Eric - tried constraints straight off but they didn't help me - thanks tho.
If you think about it it has to be that way. The edge you're rotating would have to 'grow' longer in order for the adjacent edges to remain parallel. The edge obviously doesn't grow so when the vertices move with the rotation the stationary edges attached to the same verts get longer and shorter.
Think of cutting a piece of wood at a 45 degree angle. The new edge the cut is longer whilst the original edges are parallel. it's the exact opposite of the effect you're seeing here.
Yes, yes it makes perfect sense in the real world - no doubt. But so often our software can transcend this type of real world limitation and make behind the scenes magical adjustments for us - I thought that might be the case here. No problem tho - I don't mind the manual adjustments - like I said I just didn't want to miss a trick if there was one. Thanks again everyone!
You can rotate the loop below it with Edge Constraint on, and it will work as expected, then just delete the faces above. You could also use Quick slice to cut it in the angle you want.

In 3dsmax you go to the hierarchy tab of the command panel and click Reset Transform and Reset Scale.
