After viewing several UV Unwrap instructional videos I've decided to attempt a layout on my own using a test model. As you can tell from the image below I've sewn the seams directly down the middle but am currently unsatisfied with the results (unless this is the best outcome). So what would y'all have done differently? Any and all feedback is welcomed and much appreciated!

Thank you!

This is probably the wrong subforum for this.

But, as for feedback, the first thing I'd do would be to split apart that cylinder from the main ball. There's a very hard edge there, so it looks like it's a good place to make a cut. That way the cylinder can be much more conventional unwrap. You could split the inside of that cylinder cap off as well.

The rest of the unwrapping job is then basically a sphere. Unfortunately, there is no universally perfect way to unwrap a sphere (it's basically the same thing as a globe projection: https://xkcd.com/977/ ) so how you unwrap it greatly depends on your needs when it comes to texturing it. If the "belt" is important for detail, then you can push distortion to the poles . If the texture will be super noisey, or super flat, or diffuse-only, you might be able to get away with more seams, which can bring distortion down to almost nothing. For me, I usually split off the poles and have them as circular UV shells and then make a "belt" out of the midsection of a sphere. Something like you have now would be fine (or maybe preferred, depending on how ugly seams look) if this is supposed to be a solid/seamless looking material (like a metallic Christmas Ornament). But it really all comes down to the needs of the item in the final scene.
