I'm currently stuck in a boring loop at the studio I work at. i've worked at large studios small and start ups and the most fun and enjoyment I've had has been at the smaller sized studios getting prototypes on working and up to standard.
I'm thinking about quitting and working on my own venture but I'm also curious if I could possibly supply a service to smaller teams/start ups for rigging animating and setting up things in unity for characters and props and mechanics etc...
I'm well versed in python, Maya, rigging and unity c#.
So any thoughts how i get this ball rolling would be grand! After almost 10 years I really do want to work for myself!

It's basically the same as any other freelance art role. Get that first client. Overdeliver, make them happy, and they'll likely return for more work. Ask for referrals. Keep working the sales desk, so to speak. Go to meetups and events, get your name out there.
We have some tips on the wiki about how to start & manage a freelance career. Worth another look.
