Mental Ray nOOb needs help

Hey everyone!!

Okay sooooo I just downloaded Maya 2016 extension 2 and the mental Ray plug in. I turned it on autoload as Autodesk says but can't get it to work. This is my first time doing this. I open a new scene and drop a basic cube in there and try to use mental ray but get a black screen with this:

"// Warning: line 1: (Mayatomr.Scene) : output data type "rgba_h" not directly supported by image format iff, conversion performed by mental ray"

I also tried with a low poly model in the scene  with 2 bright spot lights and got:

"// Warning: Render view: Selected region is too small"

Same thing, black screen and a .02 render time. This is a fresh install with both programs so I have no idea why it's being a jerk. I also did try turning final gathering on, changing the quality to 1 and made sure global illumination was off.

It does render with the Maya Software renderer.

The first error is harmless and can be ignored. The selected region thing typically shows up when clicking into the render view window, maybe with a tiny drag. Try dragging a region out in the render view, then single clicking again to clear the red box you just drew. Also, did you instance the second spot light?
