Concepting Help - The best way to take a value painting and turn it into colour

Hey guys so ive always struggled when it comes to taking a grayscale painting to colour. I find painting straight to colour or just working with value with much more comfort. When I do try and take a grayscale painting to colour the result always leaves me with a muddy look. Here I am attempting to fix this problem by using a method of first editing the values of the image with the curves tool and then painting over it. Firstly is this a good method and secondly may I have feedback on the colour iterations I have made so far as well as general opinions on where to take them. This is for a female viking character. Thank you
