Question about Using a 1080GTX with maya 2016

I am considering upgrading to the 1080gtx. I am currently running a rather bad card 680GTX which has problems with maya. I do play video games and do 3D work as well as the price for quadros are pretty pricey.

What I am wanting to know how many polys or a rough estimate of how many polys can be in the viewport before lagging starts to happen. (The 600 series of cards had some rather big problems where 400k polys causes lagging issues).

Thank you

I can't speak for the 1080 or what driver issues to expect. On a 980ti I recently sculpted a 3 million face mesh with  2 million more in the scene with relative ease.

It was kind of late, I should have mentioned that your CPU matters more when it comes to doing most modeling operations, so any regular edits to the mesh I mentioned were a bit less than fun, it also had UVs. Sculpting in Maya works a bit differently, but I don't know how much of the GPU it actually uses.
