Hi everyone i decided to join just for the fun of it. Ill be posting my general thoughts and where i learned some of my processes while making my character.
So i thought about what i wanted to make so i created new notepad and started listing down some elements that i would try to stick to as much as possible. For this instance what gender, what he/ she will be doing, the setting, what attire best suited for the environment, some gear and some trinkets for personal touch. What I'm going for is female in kind of a desert setting.
Next i hopped in Photoshop and just started scribbling some silhouettes. At this stage i just made the hair and coat with wide strokes trying to figure out whats gonna be recognisable from afar and whats gonna fit in the environment didn't do much refinement yet and this is the (WIP) so far:
At this point i gathered some reference from all over the net i would suggest going to fashion websites like (http://www.thesartorialist.com/) to find some good HD reference for the clothes and for some other items such as armor, military, and sports gear just a simple google search should be enough.
Firstly read this (https://www.dota2.com/workshop/) trust me this will help ALOT, just find the topic you want to learn about in one of the links i know this looks kinda plain but while working on this i regularly squint it helps me decide much faster while not worrying about every little detail. If you really wanted to add designs like tribal, logos and numbers just make a paint a flat design then just warp it around the characters forms, id just rather do the small details later after the model is done
Played around with some blend modes to find some neat combinations but of course everything is subject to change,i can already think of a few changes i can make.
Next up importing to Zbrush and hi definition sculpting. Time to bust out some video game ost's like Shadow of the colossus, Ace combat and NFS:Most wanted. these are just my personal favourites
Back, after my net went down so i wasn't able to update now i already finished the character. Went into substance painter and baked maps and textured her clothes there. only thing im missing should be the video which ill make simple and quick. low poly in maya tried lower polys on the boots but normal maps werent baking right so had to up the resolution and follow the contours better.
low poly with normal maps
while in substance its easier to have an id map baked in so you can easily select between materials
