Given the recent release of Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, and Cyberpunk 2077 possibly being released in the near future, I wanted to try myself at making an environment in a CP setting.
Woah. That's one hell of a blockout! Love the way the city builds and rises away in the distance... Maybe throw a few different colours in there? All the foreground signs seem to be very blue/white when I think they would be all vying for attention. Nothing else to really say at this stage though! Looking forward to see how this develops
Here's an update, didn't have a lot of time to work on this, but I've added quite a few neons, tweaked some models and worked on the background objects. I plan on adding a few more. What do you think? Perhaps it's too much already? @The Rizzler @beefaroni To be fair that was a very wide shot, there's a lot of work still ahead of me to polish it enough for closeups(as you can see on the third image. I think I'll focus on the first couple of buildings and their 'vicinity'.
it looks impressive, my crit is that for me there is no where for my eyes to rest or focus. Im thinking some atmospheric fog or steam to cover some background elements partially would maybe work.
I've been busy and had a long break from working on this. I've removed some of the distracting stuff and focused on readability in general. I'm kind of starting to get indifferent when looking at it, so any feedback is welcome.
When I look at your last posts thumbnails they look so good as far as the color palette. Has that new age comic look. It gets really noisy when I look at these fullscreen all in my face though. My mind kind of freaks out and doesn't know what to look at still. When I look at the foreground you have essentially 2 focal points evenly drawing attention (the bar and the fruit market) and they are on the complete opposite sides of the screen, and that's what doesn't let the viewers eye settle. You don't have to really change anything you just need to draw more attention to one side or the other. Through lighting or your colors or even changing the camera angle. Just push one of those focal points to pop more than the other. Looking awesome though!
Really nice work so far... I feel the biggest let down is the lighting... I believe this touches up on everyone else's critiques... I feel that the lighting is really flat and because it's so evenly lit it plays a part in why all your emmissive signs are fighting for attention... I'd even go as far as to push that fog density a little more and bring the start distance closer. Most of the cyberpunk visual spark comes from the glow of those neon signs so it's worth bringing the daylight system to something darker and let those signs give off a little ambience to help bring some character to the scene.
Other than that I'm really liking this, good work (Y)
Maybe you should simplify those building facades.. so the viewer can focus on what's going on at street level. It is really a lot of detail and no place to rest.. it's the amount of detail and it's also the lighting like Kid mentioned. The street is 100% wet as well, why not break it up and have puddles instead.
I love those shapes, its so awesome. Can you create an executable and let us walk around.
Sorry for a late reply. I don't know if I'll be making a build available, but I can perhaps upload one for you if you care.
I've made some changes to the environment, to be honest though I'm not happy with the lighting still, I can't quite find the right balance. I played with different lighting setups, skylight settings, fog intensities etc., but somehow each time I arrive at a similar result.
Yeah, It's a fair point. I used some fog sheets in the background, cause it kinda faded the street out, otherwise there were too much detail everywhere and because of the additive nature of fog sheets it ended up being bright. I tried many different setups for the background and lighting in general. I can't quite get something that will satisfy me fully.

@pixelpatron
Thank you!
and thanks Polycount for featuring this in the Recap!
I think that's a fair point, I definitely will play with fog and lighting some more.
Here's a quick try with Atmospheric Fog.
Thanks for the kind words @chrisevansart @snake85027 @DanielR17 ,
I haven't made a whole lot of progress since last time, but here's another update.

I toned down the foreground and I think it helps.

i will keep looking for more of your updates
Any feedback is welcome still, especially on the colors, contrast and lighting.
