Hey Polycount!
I absolutely love Overwatch as well as the games aesthetic, and have been hyped for some time now. (comon Sombra!). So when I came across the Overwatch Link concept by the super talented
Jeremy Vitry, I just had to make it in 3D. (with permission
)
Most parts are still in blockout stage and very WIP but I felt I was far enough along for any kind of feedback. I am super excited about this project and look forward to progressing here. Thanks for looking!
(Blockout)
Aaaand the base I made for good measure.

I'm not super sold on the face and hair yet, I feel like somethings off? I just cant put my finger on it, perhaps I have just been looking at it for too long.
Anyways, on to the shield/weapon/details!
@Kiyamlol Thank you!
Yup - totally see what you mean, I will definitely go make some changes. REALLY appreciate the feedback. Thanks again!
@TomGT Thanks so much!
@blastfaizu2 Thanks man! The concept belongs to Jeremy Vitry - but I really appreciate it
Finished the bakes! Its on to texturing
@PyrZern Really appreciate it
@JoseGR Happy to hear it, thanks!
My only real plan so far was to try and tackle the flow map as best I could to match their anisotropic hair effect. It will be interesting since Link has unique "chunks" in his hair as well. I felt the young Genji skin was one of the closest to what I have - so I am going to aim in that direction. I don't have a bunch of experience with that so it will be a learning process for me too! Sorry I don't have more info at the moment
Or maybe someone will see this and helps us out
Anyway can't wait to see more progress.
@JamesMeader - appreciate it man! I have seen that page and saved all those images for reference but thanks!
O.K - So a few changes along the way to this update. I adjusted the face/eyes, so hopefully there is improvement there. I also noticed I really didn't consider his silhouette when I started putting clothes on him so he started looking beefier in the mid section than I had intended . So I adjusted that a bit in hopes of making him seem a bit thinner.
I put all the base materials on him and went a tad crazy with the decals (just really wanted to see them). Now comes the real texturing! Ill tackle his hair, face, and material details with the next update; along with the sword and shield. If anyone has anything to add on what they see so far, please let me know
I'm getting thrown off a bit with the green and blue color scheme, personally. I think that one of the things that makes Overwatch characters so iconic is that they have a vibrant yet simplistic color scheme (at least with the default skins). Widowmaker is purple, Pharah is blue and gold, Tracer is brown and orange. I think that green with dark green might be a better combination, and will make Link unmistakably Link again.
@Steve Schulze - Ok cool Ill bring in some more obvious gradients then. . When you say piping are you referring to the white trim?
The guys who did the Zameen character a while back had a bit of a break down of how they did their texturing. Would be worth having a look

@Steve Schulze - haha no problem. I have seen that awesome thread as well, I will definitely look to match the shading/gradients with my next pass. Thanks!
@HeyGafilimore ty!
WIP on the sword and shield
O.K! Calling it on the textures, minus a few tweaks here and there and continuing on to the rig.
@diegohj Thank you!
@Aveon Really appreciate it man . Yeah I think I went a bit too light with the metal pieces. I will definitely make some adjustments there.
Lots of life happened between the starting and finish line for this piece, but I did finish it! More shots are on my Artstation. Onward!
@Brian "Panda" Choi - LOL
@TeriyakiStyle - Thanks so much! I have no idea what Jeremy (concept artist) had in mind O_o - but I imagined it like a cross between genji and doomfist. I really like the idea of a character with a sword and shield that has the ability to get into combat with light/heavy attacks. Couple that with damage reduction ability when holding up the shield. Perhaps even a push back ability from the shield when timed properly. The ULT would be something akin to the Zelda games where he would spin around rapidly with his sword.
So perhaps (on PC)
Left Mouse - Light Swing with minor jump.
Right Mouse - Heavy (with charge option) with large lunge.
Shift - Hold Shield up for damage block/reduction for a certain amount of time. Press when about to receive damage for a small push back or reflect option.
E - Use on of your three potions for either health, armor, or ability cool down reduction.
Q - Sword spin attack - You can also control his movement during the attack.
I probably just made an OP character but oh well haha!
10/10 pose by Stephane btw
