I got interested in video game oceans with really high waves some months
ago that can be ridden with speedboats, submarines and all kind of
vehicles.
Maybe the results will be some kind of game where you can construct your own boats, something like the the old movie Waterworld (Mad Max on water). Next step is implementing the construction framework. The buoyancy is created in a way that you can jump waves and seemless submerge under water, i.e. I did it without the usual linear/angular drag workaround to make the boats look like they move in liquid.
I work in rendering/image processing in my job and I am mainly interested in highend realtime rendering/gameplay. That's why the ocean stuff is so appealing.
Here is what I got so far. It is in Unity.

This is looking great so far!
The biggest problem I see is the wake particles. They fly upwards like smoke, when it feels like maybe they should fall back down into the water instead. The particles also could use some rotation on spawn, to combat the cloned-pattern effect.
Agree with Eric on the particles, though of course this is looking rad. You picked a very pretty subject with this project sir
Have you considered getting in touch with Unknown Worlds, the team behind Subnautica? Their game could be the perfect application for what you're working on, provided it can efficiently integrate with their game engine and gameplay.
