EDIT: So I haven't updated this in a while but these past few days, I finally got around to fixing a lot of the weird things in it. I'd love to get feedback and critiques if you have any, thanks. (=

Hi guys~! New to this forum. (: I thought I should post my WIPs in order to motivate myself.. I have trouble finishing personal projects sometimes.

I'm working on my portfolio and decided to do this concept by Tom Robinson.

I plan on sticking relatively close to the concept, so I'll be doing simple cartoony flat-ish shading on the textures.

Right picture is with consistent colors because I don't like how it looks with 3ds max's default lighting. I'll move everything into unreal and put proper lighting after I texture the rest. Hopefully it wouldn't look as shitty then. ><

CCs and advices are always appreciated~

    nice work! I love it!

The most recent one looks a lot more "girly" than the concept. Dont know if that was intentional.

    Nice job with the style!
I think the trees should be a bit more dense and deformed to get the shape of the drawing, especially the one near the door.

Looks really really great, great job ! :)
Looks like the trees had changed quite a bit in the latest picture, though i kinda agree with @Ruflse , the tree can be a bit more dense.

I found a really interesting post about dota2's stylized tree replication, might worth a look :)

This is amazing... love the style, love the feel, love the colour palette... I feel like this could do with some more foliage... or generally a foliage heavy area on the surrounding islands? just some more green to cover some of that yellow terrain, other than that... I'm really feeling this, great work :)

I think it's lovely :) my only suggestion (and it is a very minor one) is that if you're looking to line up a beauty shot for a portfolio piece, I think the one matching the concept (the diorama style in the cube of water) is actually a better choice than the panoramic one as it's a bit stronger compositionally.

Thank you~ yeah, it's very girly :(  It wasn't really my intention, I was gonna follow the concept and make the height fog yellow-ish but the yellow parts, and the green foliage stood out better with blue, so I just stuck with it.

Thank for the advice. :) I'll deform the tree trunks a bit more. The trees in that tutorial look awesome :D I'm having a lot of trouble with the concept art's tree shape though. I can't figure out a way to give it a lot of volume but keep the willow-y shape with the big curves at the bottom.

Thanks! I'll add a lot more foliage :)

Thank you~ I think I'll make two version, one for the beauty shot and the bigger scene for a quick flyover clip.

I really like the feel of this piece!  My suggestion would be to add more geometry to the foreground terrain to soften up the broad low-poly surfaces.

opens door, slips into water, ... every day :D
just kidding , this looks sweet, my suggestion is to maybe try having the light at a different angle to get more shadows, that will increase the contrast of the pic by introducing shadows. Looks great over all, am a sucker for painted texture style.

Love this, but I kinda wish the base was a circle instead of the square cutaway that it currently is. The ground kinda looks like a giant muddy meatball, I know that's how the concept is, but I think this would look better on lush grass, with the base complimenting the shape of the island object (round).

I'd also love to see you tackle the tree canopy's in the style quockhanhlk linked/referenced to.
