Learning how to sculpt

Today I really felt like that I wanted to learn how to sculpt, proper and good.
Have been a box modeler for all my days, doing hard surface but i've always wanted to do some human stuff. So I followed some tutorials, without references :(, trying to grasp the basics and look of the human head.

Just trying to get the major forms done, although I struggled particularly with the eyes, noise and ears, the hard ones :) would love any critique on what I could improve on and what I got wrong. Probably do more attempts throughout the weeks, trying different styles.

The eyes seem to be kind of small and really close together, with not much supporting structure around them.
Also, what is going on with the polygon distribution of your model? Seems really odd for zbrush. Did you decimate it?

No i'm using blender dynamesh, and I just quickly blocked out the major forms and used a higher density for the front of the face, probably should try to keep it even across the model.
Yeah I definitely need to work on the eyes, guess it just comes down to practice.

Every new sculptor does the same thing. You're going too high poly too fast. Work and build the shapes in the lowest poly way you can, then only add subdivisions after you can't possibly squeeze more detail out of that resolution. This makes it easier to block in the main shape. Going too high poly too fast causes this issue you're facing with lumpiness.

You need to work from reference, too. It doesn't seem that you did here -- no one looks like that except a neanderthal. :)

Also, for eyes, try digging out the eye sockets, then building it back up -- this creates a nice eye.

Yeah I think this technique really helped out. Used reference for this take, I think its a bit of an improvement over the last one.

    Day 3

Looking at it now, probably need to move the ear slightly down, and make the eyes a lot smaller.
Any crit would be very welcome :)

Did another one for the day, decided to take the polygon count up.

Getting the hang of things, probably need to practice on the anatomy side of things

here's day 4, trying to learn the anatomy of the face, is hard :) although I think its a definite improvement so far.

Probably still need to do some practice on the overall shape and form of the head.

Day 5, tried working on more of the proportions and the larger forms of the head right. Still think its slightly off.
Really think I need to learn and practice doing the nose, and also learn more of the anatomy around the ear part of the head.

The head shape does look a little distorted. I would refer to your anatomy knowledge first before adding eyes, nose etc. Check the silhouette before adding things like those. That will make your faces look much better!
