Been working on this on and off for some time.
Initially set on the moon but I realized a planet with atmosphere is more interesting (might still revisit the moon idea though). I'm pretty much wrapping this up at this point but I'll probably try out some different types of planets.
I tried to build it as modular as possible with about 5 greeble modules used for the details. The ship uses one 4k texture.

Created in Worldmachine. Those mountains and stuff you can see in the back are actually 3 big craters (but you can't really tell from the current angle)
Imported into UE4 and started stamping out smaller craters, changing the terrain and adding rocks.
I'll post some pictures soon and you'll see what I'm talking about.
I'm probably going to make some little video of it too, but yeah VR would be dope
tulkas09 The lighting is all baked. One directional light for the sun, and a few spot lights under the ship + an emissive material for all the little dots of light you see.
As for the BKG planet the atmosphere is mostly a Fresnel, with some work to make sure it's dark on the dark side of the planet. Actually in the top image, the side of the planet we see should be in the dark (notice the angle of the shadows). But I faked it because it looked better for those shots.
wester Thank you! I was looking a lot at 80's Lo-Fi Sci-fi for this. Glad it was noticed!
HappyConscript It's not a bad idea. I've been dabbling with including some smaller roving vehicle. Mostly for scale because right now it's hard to tell what size the ship is.
