Something changed this year with the update of mudbox, the .fbx files coming out no longer import into blender. Despite the fact that both are up to date, and that the patch states that Version: 7.x.x series fbx files should import fine.
could be some change in the profile used for FBX export. in my older version of mudbox it does not give me access to that but in blender you do have some options to play with on import, have you read up on what 'import user properties' or 'enums as strings' do, for example?
If I import OBJ it doesn't import the textures and materials for some reason with the model all together as fbx did.
Not smart enough for anything beyond "working right out of the box" when it comes to playing with the things you mentioned thomas, never heard of an enums as strings, but project deadlines won't allow me to experiment with a skill outside my scope of practice either.
Maybe run the Mudbox fbx file thru Autodesks free FBX Converter and output it to a version that Blender can handle. Haven't used Mudbox in 3 years, but use the free FBX Converter a lot, for troublesome fbx files to programs such as Unity and Unreal etc...
Just remake the materials and hook up the textures in Blender. If you don't know how to do this, or if the materials are actually going to be rendered in some game engine instead of Blender, please say which renderer you're using and I'll do my best to help.
Importing the file into Blender hanged my computer, making it completely unresponsive. I had to shut it down manually with the power button, so well, I won't try a second time.
On my PC it just says "Failed to open file shotty-mud.fbx." I think something just needs to be updated in the importer. For what it's worth, Modo 901 can't import that FBX either.
It's pretty safe to say that this isn't going to be fixed by your deadline. If you want to set up materials in Blender you'll have to export OBJs from Mudbox and do the material setup manually.
The FBX converter laforced mentioned above reports the file as being corrupt so nothing appears for conversion. If you have the option to export to a different version of FBX from MudBox try that ("FBX 2011" for example).
Just for others which might stumble over the same issue; Bastien Montagne (mont29) has written that FBX 2014 or 2015 are supported by Blender. the example FBX file exported from Mudbox(FBX2016) is not currently supported by Blender.
