Hi polycounters! Here is a scene I started some time ago, and now it's getting close to finish or at least doesn't fall under risk to become a never-ending project. So let me share with you what I have for now.
Nice work ! Really refreshing to see such a vibrant scene ! My only concern is that it makes it really easy for the eye to see how random the foliage placement is. In real life it will follow some rules, is it more in the shadow ? Is it more on flat ground ? Only next to the trees etc ... This is different for every kind of bush of course, therefore the whole placement will seem more coherent. Epic did a lot of work about that on the Kite demo, I'd suggest having a look.
Anyway, it's already looking really nice, keep up the good work !
As @Sebvhe said, Really love the vibrance of the colors you have in your scene! The only thing that I would consider replacing are the white bushes? or maybe have them more logically placed (this ties in with what @Sebvhe said). For example you could have it so that they only grow on the edges of the snowline in sparse groups or something like that.
Other then that not really much to add here as Sebvhe did a nice job summing it up. Any plans on what to add? Or are you going to call it finished now?
So I studied my references again and rearranged the foliage. Tried to preserve the variety of grass types and colors and keep it in clusters. Hope it looks more natural now
I also want to walk in it. Let me know it's possible to feel that sweet, sweet tundra landscape against my feet.
Oh, I'm not sure if you're willing, but you should look at making your own clouds. Epic's default clouds are pretty lame and stick out like a sore thumb (at least to me). But that's only if you're really trying to spice things up here. Also I personally feel your fog is too strong and is blurring out your mountains etc. Maybe try messing with settings and changing the fog colour from white to something more blue.
@macoll Thanks! That would be a great idea, if only I could treat all areas of my environment with equal attention. But there are regions not ready for such presentation
@Tetranome Good points! I plan doing some research on particles in Unreal, would be fun to make some volumetric clouds, but it will probably be my next project. And you are right, I will play with fog a bit more.
So much better already ! Agree with the clouds and fog. Also, if you don't plan on doing much more, I'd focus on getting one or two shots aced, with a proper composition, and possibly a "hero prop" as well.
@Sebvhe Thank you! That's exactly what I was going to do. With the exception of "hero props" probably, just to be realistic about planning my time Because personal projects tend to take longer, that I would like them to take.
This is great! I love landscape pieces like this. My only critique would be the rocks. I would say they look like you have a tileable rock texture on geo. I think for their size they could be 0 to 1 bakes. The detail could be alot more intentional and you could add alot more story to them that way.
@Tetranome Thanks man! Not sure about distant lands, I don't want to make forest too dense, but rather keep trees in groups. But I can probably add more of them
@pixelpatron Thank you! There are come troubles with the host, I believe. I will contact their support. Thanks for checking my website and pointing out this bug.
@wester Thanks! Rocks actually have tilable texture. I totally agree with the comment, but I wanted to give a try to procedurally textured landscape. Terrain tiles have detail textures based on camera distance, so I could make a screenshot from any point and still have enough resolution.
Hey man, love the scene. Looks great. From a beginners perspective I cant find anything wrong with it. I was wondering though Id love to learn how to setup my own scene and make my foliage, any chance you could breakdown how you did it a bit?

Keep it up!
@Luxap
I think I will make some tweaks according to the feedback and call it finished. Just looking forward to start some new project!

It was my intention to make a colorful environment, I just used google search for "tundra in fall" to find references and used what I liked most, like this photo for example: http://www.groundtruthtrekking.org/static/uploads/photos/fall-tundra.700x700.jpg

Thank you!
So I made some tweaks and here there are the latest screenshots. Really want to finish this piece
Thanks again guys for your feedback and support!
When are you going to tree spam the distant lands?
(A lot of your images on your website were missing/broken for me.)

@goart
Thanks a lot!

Thanks! It's a good idea about a breakdown, I'll try to do it when I have some time.
How did you make the trees?
I really wish you had a bear in this scene.
Thanks! I wanted to make environment full of colors, like ideal autumn
Trees are made in SpeedTree.
Yeah, bear would be a nice touch
