I'm still a bit new to texturing.
What is used the most in the industry, what will be the best money spent. Is hand painted texturing being replaced by generated materials in AAA, is it a better investment to move into Quixel? Should I just use plain old Photoshop? Is 3D coat better for texturing than Photoshop or Substance painter.

    - For "handpainted" game art texturing (as in, in a colorful WoW-style), get 3DCoat.
    - For advanced realtime materials creation and texturing (as in, realistic materials with accurate surface qualities reacting to light), get Substance Painter. Don't pay attention to the name, it is not a texture painting app but rather a texturing app.

Both will benefit (read it as = pretty much require) you to also have access to Photoshop for layer manipulation.
    That's about it.

What are your ultimate goals? If you're looking to do hand painted textures I recommend 3Dcoat. I started doing stylized in substance painter, but that's slightly at a different skill level. You'll want to learn the basics of texturing.

Oh yeah I started out in Substance painter and have a full grasp of the program start to finish. I'm actually new to 3d coat, but I just tried the demo it looks pretty simple in comparison to Substance, lol. Thanks guys, now I know to use both, depending on style needed.

I prefer 3d coat for realistic materials.   It have better brushes  and you don't have to guess what your work would be looking like in final resolution.
