Hey there, I was wondering if any of you had any experiences with working with sound designers. While knowing their role, I'm kind of lost in this field in terms of what software they use or what is the typical pipeline used in big studios or indie ones (and how different they can be!). It would be great if some of you can share experiences working with them!

Middleware: Wwise and FMOD are industry standards. You can read their tutorials to get general overview of the process.
Sound design in games is not just about creating sounds in software like Pro Tools but also scripting in-game events.
For example, here information about implementation in UE4: https://docs.unrealengine.com/latest/INT/Engine/Audio/
So usually sound designer will create sounds + implement in-game logic for them using tools provided by engine/middleware.
google the wilhelm scream... ( you can be one of the initiated with this to start your library build and an inside nod/joke of many editors/sound effects designers world wide )

Google and enjoy any documentary on Ben Burt the man who created what are probably your favorite sound designs like the light saber and blaster blasts/hits and the march of the AT-AT. He is also credited with repopularizing the wilhelm scream!
The following documentary back during Empire's airing, pretty much infected me with the foley bug. Just amazed watching him hitting the long telephone pole supporting cables and hearing the resonance travel up that metal fiber! Between that and watching footage of him recording the "schluuukmp" sound of a parking meter's metal dial springing back to add to the sound of the AT_AT's foot motion contacting ground at the end of it's rotating tension... I distinctly remember having a strong " I am positively going to do that" moment!

Personally my favorite... Walter Murch for his ground breaking work on apocalypse now!
Watch any behind the scenes or documentary on his work on that film! ( and also any documentary covering the pioneering synth score on apocalypse )
The title " Sound Designer " was first coined on Apocalypse in reference to Walter Murch!
In general any sound engineering study... Music production study will be of interest.
And for game design and film/broadcast any documentary/BTS covering "FOLEY" recording is usually always inspirational!
There are some more classics like the bird of prey screech u hear in every other film/broadcast?

There's a 'music and sound' area on GameDev, it's where I first read about Wwise. There's pros and hobbyists there, maybe they can help you more:

This is a super long guide covering a lot of "making of" several sound effects: http://www.epicsound.com/sfx/
Also, there is a lot to research in this thread: http://www.gamedev.net/topic/489025-game-audio-articles/
