personally I would suggest you spend the time on anatomy first. You can check out my pinterest collection of anatomy https://www.pinterest.com/skycity01/anatomy/ or find your own. You can learn by sketching the structure in paper or sculpting in Zbrush. When you have good knowledge of anatomy and scale, then it will be much easier to create character model.
you should tell us what kind of topology you want. For games, for sculpting, for animation.... it makes a difference! My knowledge is very sparse in this area. However since I see you using triangles around the ears, you could probably optimize the side that reaches to the face more.
