If you click any of the handles on your manipulator, coordinates will appear at the bottom left corner of the Maya window, just below the MEL command line.

Maybe there's something I've overlooked for years, I've never seen Maya do that.
@izzir This isn't the friendliest display, but Windows>General>Component editor (polygons tab) will show and manipulate coordinates. Are you looking for ways to snap a selection to the grid or another object?
The number will also update as you move a component. It's based on the location of the manipulator in world space, so if you select an edge or polygon, it'll show the average of all vertex positions.
An alternative to clicking the manipulator is to use the modelling toolkit. I like it because I can copy the value from the box and paste it in the transform box up the top to align components.
I don't understand why the box at the top was never made to both show the coordinates of the selected element and allow you to change them at the same time. It's simpler and saves UI space.

@throttlekitty there's no specific reason. I just like to know where my seletction is.
