Critic for portrait illustration

I'm generally happy with this piece, being a portrait of my wife and daughter, but I'm new to drawing and the composition and colouring is leaving me underwhelmed.

note: the chair is just roughed in and perhaps may change.

white background are usually a no-no. just adding a slight color to it, maybe a shadow on the floor and/or potential wall behind her?
