Zbrush - Afrohair help

Has anyone come across a good method to sculpt african hair without using fibermesh? I'm trying to stay pretty cartoony, but not sure if anyone has had any experience sculpting something like that.

Here's the bust. Trying to take a stylized approach to it... have been testing stuff out, nothing feeling that great.
