How to UV that efficiently?

Hello, i am pretty new to 3d and this forum, and i hope, my question isn't too stupid. So, can somebody please tell me how should i unwrap this properly? The way i tried to do this, it turned out to take forever and i believe it could be done faster. Unwrapping in 3dsmax btw.

I would select the top of each little square , grow up to the base and detach then relax those and put apart, then box map the rest  and weld the junction in a cross forming shape .
